So did/does your child have any of the recalled Mattel toys?

Yes my toddler has 4 things on their ‘list’
BUT – due to the dates Mattel gave when they were sold, mine was bough 3 months prior.
I still feel uneasy about it though, legally they won’t take the toys back as it’s not the right ‘code’ on the product.

I won’t be buying any Mattel products again – they’ve lost me as a customer.. a shame cause I love to spoil my kids !

but the resolution just Sucks!

just got one too, although a different model. it’s new and has 1megapxl capability for shooting still photos, not video. and this memory/resolution feature is only good enough to send attached pictures/jpgs via email and/or for viewing on a monitor/computer screen. it’s not enough to be able to print nice 8×10 or even 4×6 photos without faking the resolution by means of software programs like photoshop.
it should be fine for making amateur videos and maybe more but a good digital camera it is not.
movie wise, i always heard the final cut editing software is a very good product.

Every year, top toys change while some that last for years. Then there are those that even make come backs. This year has some surprises in store and some classics revisited. Here are some of the top 10 toys that make the lists of many retailers and sales outlets.

For anyone who remember,s Playskool Alphie is making a great comeback. He is a toy robot that kids love while he helps pre-schoolers learn their colors, numbers, letters sounds, shape sorting and patterns, cause and effect, vocabulary development and more. His buttons light up, he sings, plays music and loves to chat. Children will have fun with this top toy that is the latest version of the Alphie from the eighties. This is a fun Christmas gift and would delight any child when opened.

LEGO’s is recognized for its imaginative and durable building toys and at least one usually makes the top 10 toys each year. They range in a variety of items that you can build and now include buildable and imaginative games, such as the Hogwarts board game. This game comes with 332 LEGO pieces to build the game board, then instructions for 2-4 players. In this game, players move objects, staircases and even relocate classrooms to hinder their opponents. Parents and teachers like it for its ability to stimulate creativity, problem solving and keeping childrens interest. This is one of the most fun ways to learn robotics, computer programming and get a start in the world of technology.

Speaking of technology, both Uncle Milton and Mattel have mind control exercise toys for kids. If you have not heard of these you will soon see why they make the top 10 toys. Both toys incorporate the same dry sensor technology as EEG’s. In these games, you connect yourself to a headset that then reads brainwaves. As you learn to concentrate, you can move the ball as you wish.

While the Star Wars Force Trainer is set to be a popular Christmas gift due to the Star Wars branding, it is considered somewhat easier as you try to levitate the ball up and down a chute. The Mindflex game is a little more complicated as you attempt to move the ball through an obstacle course.

It has touch screen technology and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard so young children can start becoming familiar with the keyboard layout. The games use popular characters such as Shrek or Dora the Explorere to learn about colors, shapes, spelling, math, logic and more

Video games are always a hit and this year is no different. The Halo game is definitely one of the top 10 toys, due to its popularity, and falls in the video games category. Halo is out with their new version called Halo Reach, where players will fight alongside a squad of iconic Spartan soldiers. There is also a limited edition bundle that includes the Xbox 360 console, 2 wireless game controllers, headset and the Halo Reach game all for just under $400.

There are a few new console features you will find this year starting with the Playstation Move, which is similar to the popular Wii, that mimics your body movements as a controller. Mattel Profits, Surpasses Estimates

Mattel Inc. (MAT) has reported first-quarter earnings of 7 cents per share. It is quite a revelation, considering that the company was expected to report a loss of 2 cents per share according to the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company had incurred a loss of 14 cents in the year-ago period.

The better-than-expected results were primarily driven by robust sales of its core brands such as Barbie and Hot Wheels and its licensed toy lines, particularly newer ones like the World Wrestling Entertainment, Thomas and Friends, and Toy Story. Mattel is also focused on controlling its expenses and has reaped its benefits.

Worldwide net sales increased 12% from the prior-year quarter to $880.1 million. Both U.S. and International gross sales rose 12% year-over-year. Mattel reported an operating income of $45.2 million, compared with an operating loss of $55.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

Worldwide gross sales for the Mattel Girls & Boys Brands business unit climbed 14% versus the last year. Worldwide gross sales for Barbie increased 5% over the last year while Hot Wheels were up 9%. Core Fisher-Price sales increased 5% while the American Girl line increased 6% compared with the prior-year period. Gross margin was 49.1%, up 510 basis points versus the prior-year period. Selling, general and administrative expenses as a percentage of net sales decreased 720 bps to 33.2%.

The company’s rival, Hasbro Inc. (HAS) is scheduled to report its earnings on Monday.

Mattel has an industry leading position, a strong balance sheet and continues to experience the gains of its cost containment initiatives. Its focus on top line growth, margin expansion and cash conservation also augur well.

Considering the robust demand for Mattel’s products, we also anticipate an improvement in top line in the upcoming quarters. The market has also responded positively to the better-than expected earnings and the share is trading at a premium.

I own a toy store and we don’t deal with Mattel, so the answer is no.

There are some brands we carry that are made in China, however. We have Thomas trains, some of which were recalled. But the manufacturer reacted quickly to recall them.

It’s tough to be a small manufacturer of toys these days. You can either have the toys made in the US or other country with ethical practices and raise the price. Or roll the dice with china and have low prices.

The real problem is that most consumers will do anything to save money on their kids’ toys.

It’s ironic that they won’t spend ten dollars more for a safe toy for their kid, but will spend tens of thousands of dollars extra to buy a monster truck to tote the kids around in.

Are Wooden Toys Non-toxic?

In China it is still legal to use lead in the production of plastics, even when the plastics are being used to make children’s toys. The reason lead is used is because it helps to make the plastic more flexible, allowing the product to return to its original shape with ease. Worryingly, England imports over £500m worth of Chinese made toys, and 90% of the toys sold in the E U are Chinese exports.
