Top 10 List of Things you Must Do When Job hunting

Top 10 things you must do when job hunting

10. Join a gym –Constantly getting rejected can leave anyone feeling worthless and overtime can lead to low self-esteem and low self-confidence. Likewise, sitting down at home doing nothing for a couple weeks, even months can take its toll on anyone. The best thing you can do for yourself is to keep active and most importantly, keep positive. Keep positive about life, about your success at finding a job and everything else, keep a positive attitude! For myself, I did not join a gym but I started dancing Salsa. I attended a couple classes and stopped dancing years ago, and I was actually happy to find the time to start back dancing.

Now I have the time to finally break out of that beginner’s stage in Salsa and hold my own on the dance floor. I highly recommend The Secret law of Attraction by Jack Canfield. This has kept me very upbeat and always filled with ideas.

Staying positive is very important, you don’t know when someone is going to call you for an interview. You do not want to sound defeated and depressed on the telephone or in emails. No Employer wants to hire someone with a low self esteem or low self confidence. When you energy and confidence level is raised, it radiates to everything around you. Stay positive and energetic. Get The Science of Getting Rich by Jack Canfield Here!-The Secret-Law of Attraction Included.

9. Learn to Sell Yourself — Let us first do this exercise. I want you to think about the last big item you purchased. It could’ve been a car, a computer or something from the web, you name it. Why did you buy it? Yes you wanted it; yes you probably knew what you were looking for. But why did you buy that one? There are millions of others out there. What is that one thing about that one that made it so special? When you saw it, remember the way it made you feel. Yes that feeling you have been longing for. Yes, you couldn’t deny it. You had to buy it.

People always react to the feelings envisioned. Well, let’s apply this to our situation here. Imagine a hiring manager having that ecstatic feeling when viewing your resume. What can you write on your resume to make a hiring manager feel that way about you? What can you say on that first phone interview to make them feel that way about you?

The big challenge here is selling yourself. Most of us finished School not prepared to enter this fierce job marketplace. So the next best thing you can do to improve yourself personally is learn to speak and write. Learning to sell yourself is the most important skill you can learn possibly more important than the subject knowledge you learned at school. Doing some recommended readings like “Become an Expert Persuader” will help tremendously.  You can get anything from anyone if you say the right things, A friend of mine would always say.

8. Edit you Resume – Revamp your resume. For each company you applied to, you should have a slightly different resume. Research each company thoroughly, know what their needs are. Identify one of their most important needs, and highlight that one thing your resume (don’t lie it will come back to bite you). Make it stand out! Don’t put too many unrelated material and clutter your main points either. This is all part of advertising yourself and selling yourself initially. I don’t care how many times you did this already. It is worth doing again. Do you know what else helps or hurt your resume? When you are happy with your resume, send an updated copy to anyone who you contacted earlier. It’s always a good thing to always be in front their face, they will remember you(for the right things). Click Here for Professional Resume Building Tips and Software!

7. Build a Website – We are living in the 21st Century, that’s the new trend.  Create your Brand! The main purpose of your website is to market yourself. Think of all the major companies out there, we all know them for something. For example, Walmart-”Save money. Live Better” or BudWeiser-”Here we Go” or Geico-”15 ?????”… What is yours? When an employer things about you, what’s the first thing they thing about? It doesn’t have to be smart or withy; it just must be repeated in front of them over and over. List your resume on there, any portfolios you may have, hobbies, interests, projects you are working on, links to assignments you had while in school, you name it. Anything you want to put on there. Your family, wife (or special other) places you last visited. Whatever you want!

Then you will put a link to this website in the signature of you professional email addresses (something you should already have). This shows your potential employer that you are not like the thousands of other applicants. You are unique, innovative, and full of life and energy; always takes the extra step and I would love to have someone like that on my team. You can easily build a free website on the net these days. Places such as blogger.com or even on this wonderful website will allow you to make a webpage for free.

It depends on how much you want to put on there. If you need to store files etc, you may want to upgrade. I use Globat because of their templates and they allow me ftp access along with other marketing services that is very useful in my line of work.

6. Improve your computer skills – Every business is advancing now so having an array of computer skills will definitely put you ahead of the competition. Start doing tutorials on any software that you know will be useful in your field. You can put these on your resume when you feel you have mastered it or comfortable with it. This will greatly improve the way employers see you and your potential value to them. The job market is really tough, so no matter how long it takes to get that job, when you get one you will be ready. When you are finished with one software, saved any projects you did and move on to another one. This may just increase your pay grade on your first job. Ok, I won’t recommend any links here, this is up to you.

5. Send thank you or follow up emails periodically- Send a thank you email for any reason. Make sure you have your website and slogan in the signature. You can send an email thanking them for calling you. Summarize your conversation with them and restate what you can do for them and how excited you are to join them. Or send a thank you email to someone for referring you to a company. Thank them after the first interview, email and a card. Always summarizing your conversation and restating your interests and what you can do for them. Tailored properly, what you can do for them should be what they wanted in their jobs ads, website etc.. And the hardest one of all, thank them for considering you after a denial letter or email and be as professional as possible. This way, you always get your name, slogan and website in front on them. You are building your brand. If you have a hot lead, when someone shows some interest, don’t let it go cold. This part is almost like a dating game, have fun with it. Send an email to find out what’s going on or where they are in the process. Ask questions, stay in contact with that person. Warning! However, don’t overdo the emails or phone calls. Space them out if a response is not warranted. Remember to stay positive! Someone is going to see you and absolutely love you.

4. Develop a daily schedule and stick to it, as if you were working. – Being away from work or your usual activity for an extended period of time can wreak havoc on your psyche. Wake up early, plan you day. Set aside time to work on your website, your job hunt, leave some time for your tutorials, for the gym or dancing or running. Whatever you do to relax and distress. Remember, stay positive! Look at this as a much needed time off to better yourself in every area. And guess what, you are happy for it because every day that goes by; you are improving yourself in all areas of your life.

3. Build another website- At some point in time, you will need to have some money coming in. So what follows here is a rather inexpensive way to make money while you wait. You don’t necessarily have to create another website. Open a CLICKBANK account. Here you sell other peoples material (mostly digital products) and you get a healthy commission for each sale. You can also sell any digital products you want on there, this could be very profitable. Another great idea is to create an informational website about some current hot topic.  Weave some affiliate links and some Google adsense code throughout your pages. You will be amazed with the traffic you receive in just a couple of weeks. This will start making some money for you over a couple of weeks or months. Eventually, when you get good ranking on Google and other search engines, you can set and forget this website..Or update it once in awhile. As time passes by, your visitors will increase and you will make more and more money from your Clickbank links or Google adsense codes.

2. Go back to step 4. This time include no.3 in your schedule. It’s very important that you manage your time carefully and don’t get too boggled down with one thing. Remember keep positive about everything you do! You want to actively continue your job hunt. You know after awhile, this website will start making some money for you. When you do get a job, you will have two sources of income.

And The No.1 thing you need to do when you cannot find a job

1. Write an article about your summer, your experience trying to get an internship in this new career field and what you have learned about job hunting that changed compared to five years ago when you last entered the job market.

Bonus:  Tips (Not to do list)

Tip#1 Do not apply to a company online and expect a timely reply. Or worse yet, apply online and think that’s all you have to do to get a job. It may work but most likely will not.  There must be a face with your application and a personality they can trust.  That’s why most people end up getting jobs through referrals or they know someone on the inside. A matter of fact, most companies just list vacancies because they are obligated to.  In some cases, they already know who they will hire.

Tip#2 I don’t recommend trying to make money on Ebay, unless you have some capital and you can buy products at the cheapest wholesale price.

What is a job description for a Walmart Receiving Associate?

I am creating a resume for Career Development class, and I need to fill out a duties section for Walmart Receiving Associate. I basically performed overnight stocking but I am not sure what to put down. I remember restocking the health and beauty department, aisle sweeping, basic customer service, product descriptions, grocery cart collection, and backstock inventory management. I just don’t know how to word that for a resume.

It’s critical to have a good resume, it is worth taking the time to write something that looks brilliant and does the job right. The website in the box below has lots of data on resumes and assistance with extra professions.

How did you quit your job at Walmart?

I’m going to quit tomorrow, and I was wondering what the proper procedure for this is?

Also, anyone care to rant about their jobs at Walmart?
I can’t get fired, I need to keep my record clean. Plus, I’m only a part time worker so I dont know if that applies…
I have to quit tomorrow, I’m leaving for school unexpectedly soon. Please answer my question instead of lecturing guys….

In general it’s best to give 2 weeks notice at anyplace you work-it’s just considered good form. This way you leave on good terms, can use them as a positive reference and are still able to be rehired if need be later. Since you have to leave unexpectedly soon, try talking to your manager to see if you could give your 2 weeks and maybe modify your schedule somehow over the next 2 weeks to something you could both still agree on. Even if this isn’t possible, it shows you are still trying to offer something and not just quitting with no notice. Maybe ask if you could transfer, just brainstorming here…be open to any suggestions they’d have-it shows you care.

Me, I’d worked there while in school then interned and then went into management. Eventually I was offered similar management with a smaller company (same pay but much better hours) so I gave 2 weeks notice. Years later I returned to school and past coworker/friends convinced me to come back to WM. I was there in various positions until I was done with school and ready to move on to my forever job. I gave 2 weeks notice (really it was almost 5 weeks-pretty generous, huh?). My complaints: the company has changed-it used to be a fun place that cared for it’s employees. Now lawyers, stockholders and faceless bosses guide the company. Hours are to be strictly followed, the pay structure doesn’t pay as much, doesn’t raise much, your schedule isn’t consistant and your hours are often cut. It’s not the same environment that got me so interrested in it before but people still apply there-that’s the way it is…so there’s my rant… icon smile Walmart Jobs

Types of Non Functional Testing

There are many varying definitions for different types of non-functional tests. While we are not attempting to be definitive, Testing Performance would like to state what we mean by different types of non-functional tests.

The Performance Test

This is a test which measures, or determines the performance of, an application or an application component. Of all non-functional testing, this is probably the most the most commonly executed type of test.

The overall purpose of a performance test is to determine if the application will be functionally correct even at high workloads.

The objectives of a performance test would be something along the lines of;

  • Determine if the application can support the expected workload.
  • Find and resolve any bottlenecks.

It is very difficult (i.e., time consuming and expensive) to build and replicate in a test environment an exact simulation of the workload that the application will be expected to process in production. It is much easier (i.e., quicker and cheaper) to build an approximation of the workload. Often the 80:20 rule is used to persuade project managers that an approximation makes more sense. That is, 80% of the workload is generated by 20% of the functionality. Of course, no two applications are the same, in some we can easily achieve 90:10, in others it is more like 70:30. Careful analysis by the performance tester will help determine the volumetrics for the application and therefore which functions will be included in a performance test. Using the 80:20 rule is in essence compromising the testing effort. While some or most performance issues will be detected, performance issues associated with functionality not included in the performance test could still cause problems on release to production. Further steps can be made to minimise this possibility, including:

  • Manually key functions while a performance test is executing.
  • Observe and measure performance, especially database performance, in functional test environments.

Once an approximation of the production workload has been determined and agreed, the performance tester works towards building the automation together into a workload that can be executed in an orderly and controlled fashion. The work early on in the performance testing process becoming a good foundation on which to analyse and publish results, ultimately determining if the application can or cannot meet the specified objectives. Performance tests usually need to be run multiple times as part of a series of test tune cycles. Where a performance bottleneck is detected, further tests are run with an ever increasing amount of tracing, logging or monitoring taking place. When the cause of the problem is identified, a solution is devised and implemented. Again, the performance test is re-run to ensure the performance bottleneck has been removed. It is of course quite difficult to determine how many performance issues will be detected as part of a performance testing exercise. The table below is a simplistic guide to the number of performance testing cycles that may be executed depending on the origins of the application.

Applications origins

Number of test tune performance testing cycles required for first release

Number of test tune performance testing cycles required for a maintenance drop in the first 6 months after first release

Number of test tune performance testing cycles required for a maintenance drop more than 6 months after first release

From Real Job To Retail: Making The Most Out Of The Harsh Job Market

Young Job Seekers Wake Up

As a young job seeker, you may find yourself getting a rude awakening. For some reason, you’re not as  invincible against the recession as you thought.  Perhaps you didn’t consider that the economy was going to wreck as much havoc on you as it has wrecked havoc on your parents and  older friends. Retirement accounts are not the only causalities of this harsh economy.

As layoffs continue and companies downsize, everyone – including businesses have less money to spend. Here’s what’s happening: jobs are becoming more competitive because there are less to go around. Students and recent graduates tend to gravitate to the straightforward and lower paying ‘back-up” jobs such as sales and customer services. Young job seekers often use this tactic while deciding what they want to do with their lives or while continuing to apply to “real jobs”. You know, the kind with benefits that pay more than 10 bucks an hour.

Thing is, with severe layoffs, everyone is scrambling for something. Now, young job seekers are competing with newly laid off, desperate, and experienced older (and stereotypically more responsible and dependable) older workers. This unanticipated competition for sales and retail jobs is the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Job Seeker Secrets for the Young

As a young job seeker, the secret to competing is to make sure your name is synonymous with responsible and dependable. Make this clear during your interview, and if you get the job – demonstrate it every day. Don’t give up. Apply to those places you believe a desperate, laid off older person wouldn’t touch – something offbeat and different like a music store that plays loud music 10 hours a day, or a video game or electronic store where your knowledge of technology and games is more likely to trump theirs. Older, laid off workers will likely gravitate to large department stores (with their calm background music), non-profits (fulfilling), and places they like to shop themselves (where the manager probably knows them as a loyal customer and believes the older job seeker understands the product as a consumer and feels comfortable selling it to others).

Ageless Job Search Secrets

Regardless of your age, if you lose your “real job” and haven’t received a job offer from the back-up jobs you applied to, refocus. Use your current skill set and knowledge to make yourself more competitive. Because you use to have a “real job” you should be able to make in the low double digits (varies depending on where you live), especially if you have a college degree.

To use your current skill set and knowledge in order to make yourself more competitive while increasing your starting salary, apply only to those places that have something to do with your former “real job” or career. Don’t simply apply to any back-up job out of the blue that has absolutely nothing to do with the knowledge, skills, and experience you’ve acquired from your former “real job”. Examples:

  • Real Job: Artist/Craft maker – Back-up: Art Supply Store
  • Real Job: Carpenter – Back-up: Home Depot
  • Real Job: IT Specialist – Back-up: Radio Shack/Bose Corporation/Best Buy
  • Real Job: Photographer – Back-up: Moto Photo
  • Real Job: Adult Entertainer – Back-up: your local upscale adult sensuality/toy store

Get the point? Good. Get moving and stay encouraged! This recession won’t last forever. Make your “back up” job something that you feel comfortable adding to your resume because it compliments it, not embarrasses you.

While employed at your back up job, take advantage of your employee discount and speak to each customer with enthusiasm and professionalism. Don’t hesitate to “plug” what you use to do in your “real job” when speaking with your customers. This will give them more confidence in your ability to help them and they may know someone who can help you get back to where you want to be. Use your back up job as an opportunity to network and demonstrate your versatility and resilience.

This Could Be Your Next Career

Consulting is an excellent field to break into, whether you are seeking supplemental income or you are looking to turn your consulting business into a full time job. Consulting is particularly conducive to those seeking an at home business, as it is work that is flexible and can be conducted in any location. A consulting career is not limited to one area; in fact, it is only as limiting as your own skills, training, and imagination. With a well thought out business plan, a good marketing strategy, and a lot of hard work, your consulting career can start paying off immediately! The two biggest questions to ask when starting a consulting career: what type of consulting should you perform and which clients do you target? Your consulting career should be based on your interests and abilities. If you already have a number of connections, you may find success in marketing, public relations, or sales consulting. Other business minded individuals may choose to provide consulting in customer service and relations. If you have an accounting background, you could become a financial consultant. People with computer science degrees have often found great rewards in providing their own IT consultancy skills. But what if you don’t have a business background? Does that mean that you are not consultant material? Not necessarily. If you are an excellent organizer, you can provide consulting to businesses and individuals alike, helping them to keep their homes and workplaces orderly. If you enjoy party planning, there is a wide audience available, whether it be families who have no time to plan events or companies that need help with their office get-togethers. Basically any place that you see a need, there is an opening for a good, hard working consultant. Targeting clients for your consulting career can be a much larger challenge than you might expect. You can start by determining the types of clients who may be interested in your consulting work. Decide if you will be geared toward businesses, individuals, or both. If you want to focus on businesses, it may be wise to start off targeting a specific sector. Choose a type of business with which you are the most comfortable or with which you have the most knowledge, then design your marketing campaign to specifically highlight how you can best lend your services to that type of business. For example, if you are starting a public relations consultancy and wish to focus on the health care industry, you may compile a list of needs that are currently unmet in many health care environments, then show how the proper public relations plan can increase patient confidence, which leads to more business. Once you have established a solid customer base within the industry of your choice, you can then consider expanding into other sectors. If you are focusing on individuals, your marketing plan will be quite different and can be much more challenging. You are unlikely to have a predetermined list of individuals you can call, either on the telephone or in person, so your marketing plan must include a wider scope. You can start by placing ads in a local newspaper, posting in online forums, or going door-to-door, delivering flyers that advertise your services. Whichever you choose, if you have a good idea and are wiling to put in the effort, your consulting business can lead to great financial and personal success. How can i get started on my modeling career?

OK, im a 13 year old girl who just graduated from a great modeling school. Me and my mom have been trying to find out how to get me into Sears or JC penny catalogs. And i want to be in commercials and catologs. How can i get in one?
PLEASE HELP, i really want to do this

you need an agent.

what i would do is have your mom take pictures of you. it doesn’t have to be professional – it just has to show YOU and your modeling abilities. send those pictures to agencies, take them to auditions and try sending them to the catalogs or brands that you want to model for.

the most important thing is to keep your head on straight. there are a lot of model scams (not that i’m saying you’ll be scammed but) so just be careful. NO agency will ever ask you to pay for ANYTHING.

when you go to auditions, make sure you go with someone you trust. take care of your skin and hair! good luck!

What Are The Essentials For Your Work From Home Jobs?

The German philosopher Immanuel Kant said that if you sit at home alone at your empty kitchen table, eventually, the “whole world will come to you.” Well, today you don’t need the great mind of a philosopher to make the entire world come into your living room. What you do need for all your work from home jobs is a phone jack.

We live in a unique time in history; some might say a perfect time to change jobs and start to work from home. Satellites, fiber optics, the integrated circuit and other communications miracles mean that you can be just about anywhere in the developed world and establish communication with anyone.

The telephone, the fax machine, the computer, the modem — all of these are not only affordable by any middle-class citizen; they are the key to eliminating your need to drive a hectic freeway everyday to get to a place of work outside your home.

With these devices at our disposal, we should allow ourselves to “think globally.” Too often, work from home jobs focus on the narrowest market, the neighborhood, the county, the city or state. This is fine if you are providing a local service and are content with a certain moderate level of income. But if you want the big bucks, you should not think small. Also, you should not believe that, just because with your job you’re working from home, you cannot compete with the big guys.

The purpose of any business is to seek assess and seek out every possible market for its products and services, to ascertain whether these markets have the ability to buy these products/services, to determine whether there is sufficient profit in these markets to warrant approaching them, and, once positive assessment has been made, to launch a sustained marketing campaign that gets a significant percentage of this market to purchase the product or service in question.

Your home telecommunications machines will not only enable you to do this, but they can also help you overwhelm larger, more cumbersome traditional businesses that are your competition.

With any of your work from home jobs, you will not have all of the disadvantages of your more traditional competitors: no office rent, equipment or expense; no employees to pay salaries and fringe benefits for; no time wasted on meetings, employee problems, paid sick leave, etc.

All the money your competitors spend on heating the office and buying furniture could better be spent on the actual marketing itself.

With your work from home jobs, you will be already positioned where the traditional business is currently struggling to move: toward the lowest possible overhead and the greatest possible concentration of dollars on products/service development and product/service marketing.

So, jobs where you work from home take full advantage of three major goals of modern business success:

(1) Vastly reduced overhead
(2) Easy access to a global market
(3) Full advantage of telecommunications.

To not have the basic telecommunications toys — computer, modem, fax, and telephones is impossibly stupid. Still, even in this day and age, many of people strongly resist the one element that is undoubtedly the heart and brain of any successful work from home job — the computer. The computer is an essential and one definitely not to be left out when starting any of your work from home jobs. And remember, learning to use a modern computer is easier than learning to drive a car, so you have no excuse not to plunge forward.

To your success
Paul Egan

How is it working for Circuit City?

I have been looking for a new job and have been considering applying to both best buy and circuit city.

I was just wondering what any current or past employees of Circuit City thought of the job.

Any info would be awesome. Thanks.
I know that they laid off all the higher paid people to make room for new hires (or the original ones if they wanted to accept a smaller wage).

Other than that I am wondering how it is working there.

how about reading the news about circuit city instead of asking it here?

The Indian economy witnessed a decrease in the employment elasticity from 0.41 to 0.15 from 1993-94 to 1999-00. But the latest survey has seen this trend being reversed. For the period 2004-05, the aggregate employment elasticity has tripled from a low of 0.15 to 0.48.

With the trends being witnessed, it has been projected that if the economy and the labour force maintain the constant growth rate of 9 and 2.93 per cent respectively, the workforce and the labour force will converge within a short period.

The IT Industry in India the Attraction for HR Consultants

The Information Technology (IT) sector in India holds the distinction of advancing the country into the new-age economy. The growth momentum attained by the overall economy since the late 1990s to a great extent can be owed to the IT sector, well supported by a liberalized policy regime with reduction in telecommunication cost and import duties on hardware and software. Perceptible is the transformation since liberalisation – India today is the world leader in information technology and business outsourcing. Correspondingly, the industry’s contribution to India’s GDP has grown significantly from 1.2% in 1999-2000 to around 4.8% in FY06, and has been estimated to cross 5% in FY07. The sector has been growing at an annual rate of 28% per annum since FY01.

Indian IT companies have globally established their superiority in terms of cost advantage, availability of skilled manpower and the quality of services. They have been enhancing their global service delivery capabilities through a combination of organic and inorganic growth initiatives. Global giants like Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, and Lenovo have already established their captive centers in India. These companies recognise the advantage India offers and the fact that it is among the fastest growing IT markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

Summarizing some key highlights of the sector in FY06:

  • Software and services exports were estimated to have grown by 32% in dollar terms to exceed US$ 23 bn.
  • ITeS-BPO exports were estimated to touch US$ 6.3 bn, a growth of 37%
  • IT-ITeS export revenues from engineering and R&D services, offshore product development and made-in-India software products touched an estimated US$ 3.9 bn from US$3.1 bn in FY05
  • Sales of Personal computers crossed 4.7 mn units; a growth of 20% compared to 3.6 mn units sold in FY05
  • As of Dec 06, around 440 Indian companies had acquired quality certification with 90 companies certified at SEI CMM Level 5, higher than any other country in the world
  • The total number of IT and ITeS-BPO professionals employed in India was estimated to have grown to 1,293,000 from 1,058,000 in FY05

Industry Structure

The size of the Indian IT industry, according to NASSCOM, has been estimated to be around US$ 47.8 bn. The Indian IT industry can be broadly divided into two markets: domestic market and exports market. The exports market constitutes the largest segment accounting for 75% of the total revenue generated by the Indian software industry.

The domestic IT market is broadly divided into the following four segments: IT Services, software segment which includes engineering and Research & Development (R&D) services, IT-enabled Services and Business Process Outsourcing (ITeS-BPO), and Hardware. While IT Services accounted for 34% of the total revenue generated by the domestic market in FY06, the Engineering Services,

R&D and Software Products segments together accounted for 10% of the revenue. The ITeS-BPO segment, on the other hand, contributed 7%. Hardware is the dominant segment with a share of about 49%. The domestic IT market grew at a CAGR of 21.9% during FY02-06 to touch US$ 13.2 bn, and is projected to grow to US$ 15.9 bn in FY07, registering a growth of 24% y-o-y.

The exports market is dominated by the IT services market holding a share of 56.4% in the software and services exports in FY06, followed by the ITeS-BPO segment with 26.7% share and the software products and engineering services segment with 16.9% share.

The Indian hardware industry is at present estimated to be in the proportion of 30% domestic, 1.25% exports and the remaining being imports. The domestic market itself offers tremendous potential for hardware companies, thus having very few companies venturing into hardware exports. Imports of IT hardware which form a large component of the industry are mainly from Taiwan, China and Korea. Lately, however, MNCs in the hardware segment have been viewing India as a hub for setting up hardware manufacturing facilities, for instance Dell.

IT Services Exports

Indian IT Services exports grew from US$ 10 bn in FY05 to US$ 13.3 bn in FY06, registering a growth of 33.4%, and is further expected to reach US$ 18.1 bn in FY07, posting a growth of 36%. Revenue from ‘projects’ dominated the IT Services exports with a share of 58%, with outsourcing and support & training activities accounting for 33% and 9% respectively.

Source: D&B Research

Within the ITeS-BPO segment, Customer Interaction Services (CIS) account for nearly India’s IT Exports XIV 45-50% of the total ITeS-BPO services exports while finance & accounting contributes for the remaining 40-45%. Human resource and other high-end knowledge-based processes account for 2% and 8-10% respectively.

The Software product, Engineering services and R&D segment contributes around 17% of the software and services exports. India is well positioned in the engineering and R&D services segment. Apart from Indian companies offering these services, several foreign companies (both captive and third party) are also setting up base in India to provide these services. Overseas companies operating in sectors like high–tech, telecommunications, automobile, aerospace, heavy machinery, construction and industrial products are looking at off-shoring their engineering and R&D related work to India.

Few important characteristics of the Indian IT sector include:

  • Export intensive: Ever since the industry’s evolution, exports has been the major contributor to the industry.
  • Concentration on Low-end services: Low-end services such as customised software services and maintenance have been the key strength of the Indian IT companies. These companies are now however moving up the value chain offering end-to-end solutions to clients.
  • Labour intensive industry: The very nature of the services offered by the industry makes human resources a significant driver for the industry.
  • Fragmented industry: D&B’s inhouse database has identified over 8,000 companies which operate in the IT space in India, offering a wide range of software products and services. A large number of these companies are unorganised players
  • Skewed concentration: The revenues of the top four companies, TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Satyam, including income of their subsidiaries, account for around 22% of the overall industry. This skewness is all the more pronounced in the case of software services.

Emerging Trends in the Indian IT Services Industry

While the global IT players are aggressively scaling up their operations in India, due to the advantages that the Indian industry offers, the Indian IT companies are also preparing to tap the global market.

The companies are witnessing significant change with regard to their service offerings and geographical concentration. Today, companies are expanding their service offerings from application development and maintenance to high end services like testing, consulting and engineering designing. The global delivery model has not only facilitated the companies in delivering quality of work but also helped them to control costs.

Emerging IT Services Dynamics

Over the years, the Indian companies have positioned themselves well to reap benefits of the emerging scenario in the IT sector.

New Service Offerings

The Indian IT companies are expanding their service offerings to provide a complete basket of services to their clients. These new services include IT consulting, testing, business process management and IT infrastructure services, which in a way allows the IT companies to de-risk their business from pricing pressures and enter into newer areas which provide them higher growth and profitability.

Larger Deal Size

Indian IT companies have successfully scaled up operations and made a mark in the global outsourcing market, evident from the large deals bagged by the Indian IT companies in the past one year, including the British Telecom-Tech Mahindra deal which was worth US$ 1 bn, the Pearl Insurance-TCS deal (£ 486 mn), the Skandia-HCL Technologies deal (US$ 200 mn) and the Kimberly-Clark-TCS deal (US$ 100 mn). Most of the deals bagged by the major companies were in the Banking and Financial Service space which reiterates the growth in this vertical. As per the data compiled by Technology Partners International (TPI), the Asia Pacific region witnessed a significant increase in total deals amounting to US$ 10 bn in 2006 from US$ 6.1 bn in 2005. Indian companies bagged contracts (above US$ 25 mn) worth US$ 2.7 bn in 2006, with a market share of 25% in the Asia Pacific region.

Growing presence of MNCs

Cost arbitrage and the availability of a large talent pool has attracted several MNCs to India. Big players like IBM, Accenture, Capgemini and Oracle among others have not only increased their headcounts in India but also outperformed their global performance in terms of revenue growth. Their Indian operations are witnessing strong growth as compared to their global business. Some of the major global companies like Intel, IBM and CSC are cutting jobs abroad and shifting their base to India.

Investment Plans of MNCs in India

Emerging Markets: In terms of geographical contribution, the US continues to remain the key market for Indian IT companies, accounting for 67.2% of the software and services (including BPO) exports from India. However, Europe is also emerging as an important market for the Indian IT industry, considering the fact that the share of exports to Europe from India increased from 22.2% in FY03 to 25.1% in FY06. After the US, Indian companies are looking at the European region as a potential market for exports and also to expand their global presence. Mergers and acquisitions has been one of the routes that the Indian companies have adopted to enhance their presence in European markets.

Changing Growth Drivers: There has been a change in the revenue composition of companies in recent years. The revenue contribution of high-growth segments such as infrastructure management services, package implementation, testing and consulting has witnessed a continuous increase. This is in sharp contrast to the earlier trend wherein almost all companies were largely dependant on the Custom Application Development and Maintenance (CADM) services segment for their revenues. Today, the share of CADM has decreased to 49% in FY06 from 80% in FY01. Thus, newer service lines are not only enabling Indian companies to increase their sales by cross-selling to their existing customers, but also improving their average billing rates and recognition of being end-to-end service providers.

New End-users: In terms of user industries, the BFSI and hi-tech/telecommunication industries remain the leading verticals for the Indian IT companies. Together, these sectors account for 58% of the Indian IT-ITeS exports. Though these verticals have good growth potential, other sectors such as manufacturing, retail, healthcare, utilities, etc., are also emerging as promising segments for the Indian

IT companies. While the BFSI sector has the potential to provide large size contracts to the IT companies, the manufacturing sector can provide large number of deals/assignments to the Indian players.

Presently, the Indian IT companies are on a hiring spree which indicates their bullishness on their order flows. All the major players have increased their manpower by 15-50%, and the trend is expected to continue further. As a result, the companies are expected to scale up their operations. The Indian IT companies are also vying for inorganic growth, with a quest for newer geographical areas, service offerings, domain expertise, customers and markets.

Concerns for the Indian IT Industry

Though demand conditions have been optimistic, the Indian IT sector is exposed to certain risks which may deter growth. An appreciating rupee, anticipated slowdown in the US economy, shortage of skilled manpower, limitations in domestic infrastructure and competition from other global players offering manpower at low cost like China, Philippines and Vietnam can have a negative impact on the performance of the Indian IT companies.

Besides, increasing activities of global MNCs in India will make difficult employee retention for Indian companies. NASSCOM opines that there will be a shortage of half a million people in the IT and ITeS segments by 2009. With an industry attrition level hovering around 20-25% (often higher for smaller players), companies are likely to offer an increase of 10-15% in salaries in the coming years.

On the financial front, wage inflation of 10-15% and forex fluctuation can reduce the top line as well as the bottom line of the companies. Unless the Government defers the withdrawal of tax incentives which is due to expire after 2009, IT companies operating out of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPIs) are likely to witness an increase in their tax liabilities, which may reduce their profitability further.

IT Jobs in India

Information Technology refers to the management and use of the information using computer-based tools. It can refer to both hardware and software. Mostly, it is the term used to refer to business applications of computer technology rather than scientific applications.

The Role of Consultant in Employment

The Job Industry is one of the largest and most competitive Industries in the world today. With the growth and expansion of society as a whole, manpower requirement are sky rocketing.

A Consultant or a Recruitment Firm is an entity that works towards reducing clutter and streamlining the manpower requirements of Companies, big and small. These firms serve as middlemen and help organizations and job seekers to find each other.

Who Hires Whom?

Companies hire Placement Consultants who in turn help them to find the right candidate to join their organization. Job Seekers contact Recruitment firms to help them identify and then apply for the right job.

Today, the Recruitment Industry has grown to tremendous levels and there are specialized consultants serving different fields.

How It Works?

Consultants work for a number of different Companies, small and large.

These head hunter groups receive details about the job vacancy such as job responsibilities, desired experience, remuneration etc.

Next, Consultants go through their present database of job seekers registered with them. This database of aspiring candidates is a Placement Consultant’s resource built over a period of time.

Job seekers contact recruitment firms either through phone, email or walk-ins and register their Resumes with them.

How to apply for a job through Placement Consultants?

In India, job seekers rely highly on Placement Consultants and recruitment firms in their quest for a suitable job.

The Job Hunting Cycle –

Identifying a Placement Firm – The biggest challenge for most job seekers is to identify good Placement Consultants, list of Placement Agencies, Employer Websites, in India & International - a valuable resource for all job seekers.

Contacting them – Once a list of Consultants is drawn out, the next step is to contact them. Candidates can email their latest updated resumes or talk to them personally and explain their requirements. Candidates should remember that this is an ongoing process and should be done properly. Remember: mail boxes of Consultants often go beyond their storage limits so remember to follow up with them through phone.

Example of Global hunts leading HR consultants:

The recruitment process can be categorized in three phases, namely:

1.      Planning

2.      Implementation

3.      Closure

PLANNING – Structure, Focus, Identity and Prepare

Working as team with our client, we identify the required experience and other characteristics, necessary for the successful candidate.

The initial planning enable them in identifying needs of both the company as valid candidates, which further leads us in deciding on a search strategy to target on spot education, personality  and experience.

Mapping Exercise

During the mapping exercise we perform industry specific desk and field, requirement of companies and relevant people so as to identify the key competencies. It include principal accountabilities, key result areas (KRAs) authority to be infested, external contacts, reporting procedures and supervisory relationships, working conditions / employee job specifications, compensation package, location and other necessary details.

Long list Generation

The field research provides us a long list of qualified candidates, who are worth pursuing the process; we start the search to identify the suitable candidates either from our own database or by advertising for the position.

IMPLEMENTATION- Preliminary Interviews short listing of candidates, Informal Reference checks, and client interviews and formal reference checks.

Preliminary Interviews

We select the potential candidates on the basis of experience, qualifications, strength and weaknesses and the ability of the candidate to the work-culture and ethics of the client organization.

Shortlist Generation

The preliminary interviews result out in short-listing of highly qualified candidates. Once the reports are generally prepared and submitted in writing to our clients on four or five who fulfill the specified position closely.

Informal reference checks

We conduct informal reference check to verify the listed achievements and last experiences of the short-listed candidates. After this phase, a list is handed to the clients’ recommendations and assessments.

Client Interviews

After the informal reference checks, we schedule a meeting between the short-listed candidate and the client with proper travel arrangements and handling of reimbursement of travel. The consultant asks both the client and the candidates for the feedback after every interview.

Formal reference checks

After client interviews, we conduct a formal reference check of the selected candidates contacts individuals  / companies that are capable of providing details of the qualifications, work ethics and other relevant feedback. The comments made by these are then reviewed with the client.

CLOSURE - Negotiations & offer, Follow-up / progress and handholding

Negotiation & offer

The Global hunt actively participates in the negotiation process including compensation. Both the client candidates draw on our in-depth knowledge of market compensation and benefits in discuss and plan a competitive and equitable package.

Follow up / progress

Understanding the importance of follow up / progress phase, we keep in touch until the time he /she joins the company.

Handholding

After the successful candidate joining for a specified job, we keep an ongoing dialogue the candidate and the client. This handholding process ensures a smooth integration of organization and accomplishment of targets and performance goals.

Market share of HR Consultants in India

The Rs.1, 600 crore job search market in India is dominated by consultants who have about 65 per cent market share. A majority of them are small players who use job portals for recruiting candidates.

Future Role of HR Consultants

Traditionally, the role of the Human Resource professional in many organizations has been to serve as the systematizing, policing arm of executive management.

In this role, the HR professional served executive agendas well, but was frequently viewed as a road block by much of the rest of the organization. While some need for this role occasionally remains — you wouldn’t want every manager putting his own spin on a sexual harassment policy, as an example — much of the HR role is transforming itself.

The role of the HR manager must parallel the needs of his changing organization. Successful organizations are becoming more adaptable, resilient, quick to change direction and customer-centered. Within this environment, the HR professional, who is considered necessary by line managers, is a strategic partner, an employee sponsor or advocate and a change mentor.

Strategic Partner

In today’s organizations, to guarantee their viability and ability to contribute, HR managers need to think of themselves as strategic partners. In this role, the HR person contributes to the development of and the accomplishment of the organization-wide business plan and objectives.

The HR business objectives are established to support the attainment of the overall strategic business plan and objectives. The tactical HR representative is deeply knowledgeable about the design of work systems in which people succeed and contribute. This strategic partnership impacts HR services such as the design of work positions; hiring; reward, recognition and strategic pay; performance development and appraisal systems; career and succession planning; and employee development.

Employee Advocate

As an employee sponsor or advocate, the HR manager plays an integral role in organizational success via his knowledge about and advocacy of people. This advocacy includes expertise in how to create a work environment in which people will choose to be motivated, contributing, and happy.

Fostering effective methods of goal setting, communication and empowerment through responsibility, builds employee ownership of the organization. The HR professional helps establish the organizational culture and climate in which people have the competency, concern and commitment to serve customers well.

In this role, the HR manager provides employee development opportunities, employee assistance programs, gain sharing and profit-sharing strategies, organization development interventions, due process approaches to problem solving and regularly scheduled communication opportunities.

Change Champion

The constant evaluation of the effectiveness of the organization results in the need for the HR professional to frequently champion change. Both knowledge about and the ability to execute successful change strategies make the HR professional exceptionally valued. Knowing how to link change to the strategic needs of the organization will minimize employee dissatisfaction and resistance to change.

The HR professional contributes to the organization by constantly assessing the effectiveness of the HR function. He also sponsors change in other departments and in work practices. To promote the overall success of his organization, he champions the identification of the organizational mission, vision, values, goals and action plans. Finally, he helps determine the measures that will tell his organization how well it is succeeding in all of this.

Conclusion

The Consultants play a vital role in staffing of clientele needs and provides employment for local people, however getting the right prospective candidate for employment still remains a challenge because of changing manpower requirements of the clients based on the project assignments they carry out and moreover the consultant should be acting as gap filler and also to care about the changing needs of preferences of candidates who look to be placed under better employer.

However, the consultants should provide advices for the employer for practicing finest human resources policies so that they can afford to retain the employees by providing lucrative benefits so that the dearth of quality professional can be reduced. It is up to employer consultant to vigil on the competition in the industry to match the requirements arising out of competition.

It is also important for the employer to prepare the right job description and forward the same to consultant, who can bring the right candidate for right job.

The consultant should not restrict themselves to staffing and should ease the difficulties faced by both prospective employees and employer. The consultant should be a good stragiest who can leverage the skills of prospective employee in placing them in right organization.

For the consultants the era has begined to create the new talent pool who can take the organizations to the reach its goal and inturn the consultants should cultivate to have immaculate systems and process of creating jobs in the market and finally to reduce the failure in the process of staffing.
