What type of camera should I purchase?
I am quite interested in photography and while I’ve taken two classes (one at my high school and another at a local community college), I’d still like to pursue my interest as a hobby (I am interested in mostly macro, nature, urban, and conceptual photography). Right now, I have a Sony Cyber-Shot that is only 8.1 megapixels.
I’ve been scouring the Internet for digital cameras, but considering I’ve only had practice with a Canon AE-1 from 1977, I don’t know what to purchase.
I want a simple camera that is easy for beginning photographers and I would like both a choice between automatic and manual settings.
I’ve been looking at: both a Canon Rebel XSi and an XTi, a Nikon D300S, and an Olympus E-450.
Are any of these a good purchase to make? What would you recommend I use?

I graduated from point and shoot to a Canon Rebel XSi (aka Canon 450D). If I had to do it all over again, I’d choose either the Rebel or a Nikon D40. Why these 2? Availability and huge library of lenses to choose from. Both manufacturer have 3 lines of lenses, basic, good, and awesome (pro grade). The camera itself is just a basic black box. The lense is what defines your capability and creativity. There are also tons of 3rd party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, etc. that make lenses for both Nikon and Canon so you get even more choices. I’ve shot both Nikon and Canon. They both have their own characteristics. I chose Canon because I print very large 20in x30in or larger. Higher end Canons (EOS1D) have a very high pixel count (24 Megapixel). Nikon is typical 12.1 Megapixel – even their top end models. Not to knock Nikons, their image sensor shoot insanely high ISO (124k+ for the Nikon D700) without a lot of digital noise.
For what you are doing though, you can’t go wrong with either. Your ceiling for creativity is much higher with a DSLR, so start there.
