The Challenge of Exceeding Client Expectations
Although many projects have a definitive start and finish, it is not uncommon for the landscape designer to retain an ongoing engagement with clients, to provide ongoing advice or assistance with a plant management programme or to make additional ‘planting’ inputs co-inciding with major events, e.g., births, weddings etc.
As we design and construct gardens, this benefits the clients in many ways, for example, it facilitates direct and efficient access to incorporating changes. As one contact point, the client is engaging with one company so communication lines are direct and clear. The synergies and efficiency of dealing with one company will also provide a more efficient project execution with the added advantage of being more cost effective than dealing with multiple service providers.
Our approach to all projects irrespective of scale and scope is to listen to clients. A key aspect at the initial briefing meeting is to understand client’s concerns and indeed aspirations. As designers we are determined to exceed client expectations, and with our extensive practical experience of many projects we are in an ideal position to provide advice, inspire and indeed on occasions challenge the client with the goal of achieving not just the ‘dream garden’ but in doing so utilising as much as possible the site aspects and prevailing conditions.
There are a vast range of garden styles, ranging from the intense herbaceous style garden to a compromise of high visual ‘architectural style planted schemes’ of contemporary and low maintenance planting schemes through to the other side of the spectrum which might be a Japanese planted scheme of raked gravel areas.
We receive much feedback and praise from clients and prospective clients concerning the appeal of the structural characteristics of many of our gardens. Although we do not subscribe to a specific house style, many of our projects reflect our belief that gardens are outdoor spaces and not just a planted outdoor area/room. Increasingly the garden is becoming a great outdoor living space capable of meeting the demands and challenges for a range of activities, including gardening, entertaining, play, or simply relaxing retreats.
Landscaping is not just limited to rear gardens, increasingly clients are also commissioning the design and development of the Front garden/Driveway areas. A particular challenge here is to reach a practical layout for parking of cars but also an important challenge is the design of the garden scheme that achieves a more harmonious but visually appealing balance of car parking and garden that compliments the architectural attributes of the house.
Some examples from recent projects in Mount Merrion and Blackrock might help illustrate the results of our efforts to achieve practical but attractive layouts. The projects also reflect our expertise in implement projects which feature exclusively natural stone, used in various coherent forms but executed in a creative and distinctive fashion.
