In geology terms, why would outcrop width be different on each side of the axial plane?

my guess is something like plates moving faster before than in more recent times…but that’s probably wrong

The outcrop width would be different if one side of the fold was dipping more steeply than the other side. The greater the dip angle, the thinner (and closer to true bedding width) the outcrop would appear. A 90 degree dip would show the true width of the bedding.
