In many pumps, turbines and compressors, there is axial shaft float. what is the reason for this.?

*Also known as End Float. Movement of one shaft along its centreline due to the freedom of movement permitted by a journal bearing or a sleeve bearing. This adjustment should be set before performing vertical or horizontal moves. The degree of axial float can be adjusted by the position of the stops, or whatever limits the motion.

*End float refers to the amount of axial movement in the motor/pump/turbine/compressor’s shaft.

*There are a number of factors that can contribute to axial motor shaft movement including
part tolerances,
bearing pre-load method,
thermal expansion, and
bearing wear over time.

*That is why some times reinforced arrangements are used for the shaft mounting.

For example , a pump is having a cylindrical bearing at inboard end and double row angular contact bearing at outboard end.

For that one end is located and other end is floating especially for a long shaft and where manufacturing tolerances are affected by temperature.

*“Shaft End play (D) – shall be between 0.001” and 0.003” for back-to-back thrust bearing applications and approximately 10 times the internal radial clearance of the bearing (posted in bearing manufacturers application books) for single radial bearing applications. This figure will vary from about 0.006” to 0.026” depending on the bearing size.”
Total pump axial movement should not exceed 0.004 when using two angular contact thrust bearings. This figure is based on the pump operating at 100 degrees F or less.

Compressor Aerodynamics

$77.57

Starting from first principles, this book looks at the aerodynamic behavior of axial and radial compressors. The text starts with general ideas, and then moves through the simple aspects of axial compressors to the more advanced three-dimensional ideas. Radial compressors are treated in two sections: impellers and diffusers. Noise and aeroelasticity are considered in one chapter, and another chapt…
