Toy Story 3 – Is This the Movie That All Merchandisers Have Been Waiting For?
So what have Pixar done this time that will please an ever growing audience of Toy Story movie fans and also the many, many companies who produce merchandise that fills our departments stores? Well there are a few new characters such as Rex, an endlessly worrying and insecure dinosaur or Twitch, an awesome half man half insect action figure. This will enhance the product ranges of many merchandising companies and enable more products to be generated by the increase in demand once the film is launched. Action toys are a good example of this as each comes individually packaged and allows for a collection to be built.
Will Toy Story 3 capture the imagination third time around? This is a definite yes, as already many product manufacturers remember the huge demand for Toy Story 1 and 2 merchandise. It helps that there are still the big name stars behind the new version, Tom Hanks as Sheriff Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and now Michael Keaton as Ken, not forgetting Whoopi Goldberg as Stretch. If that does not do it then perhaps the fact that the new film will be released in 3-D may get the audiences flocking to the cinema to see how many of the characters have adapted to this format.
Can Toy Story 3 top Avatar as the biggest grossing film of all time? Avatar managed to gross over $2.7bn in 2009 and with Titanic way behind on just over $1.8bn in number two position it will be interesting to see if Toy Story 3 is able to capture a bigger audience in 2010. Disney and Pixar have been slowly releasing more trailers and established promotions with companies such as Lego and Mattel as the launch draws nearer. Only recently Steve jobs of Apple showed a demo of Apple’s new iPhone OS 4 using an iAd for the new Toy Story 3 movie, which gives the new film a premium promoter. All this promotion is sure to get shoppers turning out in their thousands to get their hands on the latest toys, video games and many other forms of merchandise.
With the credit crunch not long behind us, it was surprising to see the popularity and expense paid out after the Avatar launch, it it just goes to show that even in times where money may be harder to find, we still manage to make sure our little ones have those latest toys and games that are brought about by new movies such as Toy Story 3.

Power Wheels
History
The Power Wheels brand name dates back to 1984, when San Francisco-based toy company Kransco acquired Pines of America, makers of battery-powered vehicles for children. Two years later, Kransco renamed the line “Power Wheels”. By 1990 sales of the battery-powered vehicles reached over 1,000,000 per year.
In 1994, Power Wheels was purchased by Mattel. Following Mattel’s acquisition of Kransco, the Power Wheels line immediately became part of Fisher-Price toys out of East Aurora, New York. With the addition of new vehicle licenses the new Power Wheels by Fisher-Price and Mattel lines did well.
In 1999, Fisher-Price announced the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Ride-On which contributed to a year of record sales for the entire product line.
Power Wheels Vehicles
Power Wheels ride-on cars, trucks and motorcycles have been sold with over 100 model names.
The latest line of Power Wheels features small scale versions of popular real world vehicles, including the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Hurricane, Ford F-150, Ford Mustang, Kawasaki KFX quad, Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Cadillac Escalade EXT as well as Lightning McQueen from Pixar movie, Cars.
Safety Recalls
Power Wheels vehicles have been the subject of Safety Recalls.
The first recall in 1991 involved the 18 Volt Porsche 911, in which the contacts in the foot pedal switch could weld together in use. If this were to happen, the motor would remain running and the vehicle would continue moving forward, unable to stop. A new accelerator pedal was fitted that eliminated the possibility of welded contacts.
In 1998, Fisher-Price undertook a monumental recall of up to 10 million Power Wheels 12 volt and Super 6 volt vehicles manufactured since 1986. The recall and repair program was conducted to replace battery fuses and strengthen battery connectors in order to prevent the units from overheating. The main difference of a post recall Power Wheel is that the original “H” (or on very early Power Wheels, “S”) connectors are removed and replaced with the larger, black “A” connectors. If a Power Wheels ride-on was built in or before 1998 and has the Black “A” connectors, then the recall work has probably been performed.

The Essential Part of Knowledge in Buddhism
I no know, you know no
Information is the gathering of facts, figures, images and sounds that one can label and categorize. Knowledge, in its most basic definition is to perceive directly, have direct cognition of, or to have understanding of. In the Biblical archaic sense, it was seen as to have intercourse with – as in that one could only truly know a woman by actually experiencing her (Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, 2009). The emphasis on all the definitions is the personal act of experience. Foster compares the difference between information and knowledge by using the example of riding a bike. Instruction manuals will explain the basics of the bike, the parts and such, but the only way one can learn how to ride a bike is by actually riding a bike.
Foster says that the practices in Buddhism are to lead one towards knowing. In Sankrit, the word is Prajñā, which can also be translated as consciousness. (Shambhala Publications, 1991). This term is especially important in the philosophy of the Mayahana, as emphasized in the Prajñāpāramitā Sutras, in which one can let go, so that one can see reality and truly understand the nature of things and oneself (Harvey, 1990). As the Shambhala Dictionary of Buddhism and Zen (p.171)explains, these are things “that cannot be conveyed by concepts or intellectual terms.” Perhaps the best explanation I’ve seen so far is, “If you don’t taste sugar, you can’t understand sweet; if you don’t taste salt, you can’t understand salty. No one can taste for you. You have to do it yourself (Sahn S. , 2006, p. 313).”
Where’s the Faith?
According to Richard Dawkins, in The God Delusion, “Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.” Blind Faith, such as stated by Dawkins, has no role in Buddhism, as Buddhism does not require “belief” or “faith” as part of one of the essential parts of the practice. Noted Zen Writer Thich Nhat Hanh agrees and claims in his book Interbeing: Fourteen Guidelines for Engaged Buddhism, that one of the main principles of Buddhism is “do not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine, theory, or ideology, even Buddhist ones. Buddhist systems of thought are guiding means; they are not absolute truth.” It seems that Foster agrees, as he states that he has an issue with texts that translate words such as faith and belief in the Buddhist context. Instead, Foster says that the correct translation in these cases would be confidence, as that which is gained through experience. Confidence plays out in Buddhism, according to Foster, because one can see that certain techniques and facts laid out by the Buddha turned out to be true, thus one can have confidence that the other things that they can’t prove immediately, are more likely than not to be true also. K. Sri Dhammananda Maha Thera explains in What Buddhists Believe that “confidence is an assured expectation, not of an unknown beyond, but of what can be tested as experienced and understood personally… To a Buddhist, confidence is a product of reason, knowledge and experience. When it is developed, confidence can never be blind faith. Confidence becomes a power of the mind.”
I think that it is important to note that Foster states that he says that belief in something may be harmful, because when someone believes something they stop examining it. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons throughout history in general Buddhism has not been violent: if you do not have blind faith, there is no reason to have to use violence to force people to believe in your religion. Instead, you ask practitioners to examine the principles and form their own insight. I believe that Rufus, from Dogma may have said explained it best, when he states “I think it’s better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier. Life should malleable and progressive; working from idea to idea permits that. Beliefs anchor you to certain points and limit growth; new ideas can’t generate (Smith, 1999).”
Read, Contemplate, Meditate
So how exactly does one gain confidence in the teachings? Foster states that there is a threefold mechanism to engaging Buddhist teachings. He explains that they are to read or hear the teachings, then to contemplate the teachings and lastly to meditate. This is based on the Three-Fold system of logic, often called the Ground, Path and Fruition system, which is used to engage a subject completely (Senge, 1987). Foster sees that the first step in engaging the Buddha-dharma is to actually listen or read the teaching of the Buddha. The next step is to contemplate the teachings – to think about their relevance, their implications and their truth. The last step, meditating, is described by Foster as “steeping” where the previous two steps integrate themselves into us through just sitting. “You engage in practice by integrating what you have learned and then the knowledge that arises from meditation evolves… If you integrate these teachings in your practice, knowledge from meditation will unfold. (Senge, 1987)” Through this step, these processes one is lead towards actually knowing.
Go Buddha, Go
Armstrong states that the “later Buddhist scriptures would evolve elaborate mythological accounts” of the Buddha’s going forth, (Pabbajja) but that her version is based on the straight Pali Canon of scripture. Many of the differences between the Pāli Canon and that of the commentaries of the Nidanakatha has less to do with the historical differences between them, but an interpretation of the events filled with mythological happenings that explain the events that happened (Armstrong, 2001). It sees all of the events in Gautama’s life as being of ‘cosmic importance’ (Harvey, 1990) and expounds on that to create an in-depth religious discourse.
Now and Then
Armstrong calls the time in which Buddha was born the Axial Age and says that throughout the world, especially in the China, Greece, India and Iran there was a great growth of religious upheaval. She sees this upheaval as part of a way to deal with the problems of the times, as a way to “cope with the misery of life, transcend their weakness, and live in peace in the midst of this flawed world. (Armstrong, 2001, p. 11)” The dominate religions that were developed during those times still exist today, albeit in different forms – Judaism, Christianity and Islam are different forms of basically the same religious foundation, and dominate the world religious scene most of the time currently. I believe we are in a similar time now, in which humanity for whatever reason is looking for new solutions that go beyond the traditional beliefs. According to Jacquelyn Small in The Sacred Purpose of Being Human, research indicates “that there are some 50 million people in the United States today forming a new subculture interested in experiential personal growth… these are not ‘new agers’… but scientists, architects, university professors…(these people) are reshaping our larger culture… stepping out of the old, fragmented ways of being and coming into your true selves. (Small, 2005)”
India of the past was a very poor country (Foster, 2003), and in the story of the Buddha, the rich had a great deal of money, and the poor were left to the streets often for begging. People were seeking ways out of this pain and suffering (Armstrong, 2001). In the United States, wealth inequality is growing at an extreme rate. In 1962, the wealthiest 1% of the nation had 125 times the wealth of the typical household but in 2004 they had 190 times as much as the typical household (Allegretto, 2006). In other words, the rich are getting richer, and the poor getting poorer.
I believe that in this country, we are facing a time where more and more people are looking now for a way out of this current trend. As the world shrinks and the average person has more and more access to information, it seems that we are more and more open to new ideas that challenge our preconceived notions. Similarly to the time of the Buddha, we are looking for something different to relieve the pain and suffering. According to the Buddhist Faith Fellowship of Connecticut, “from the years 1990 to 2001, Buddhism had grown 170% and transformed itself into the 4th most practiced religion in America. (Lewis, 2008)” Lewis says, and I agree that the trend of Buddhism is partial due to “Buddha’s central message of compassion, tolerance and rationality, in which personal experience and spiritual transformation overrides traditional western religious fear and blind faith in ancient dogma and Christian mythology.” Christianity has responded differently to the current economic situations, and a growing theology in evangelical Christianity is the Prosperity theology which teaches that God gives wealth onto those that deserve it (Biema, 2006).
How is this no different than the development of Caste system in India, where the poor were poor because of their bad Karma, and that the Gods thus ordained their downtrodden existence? This system was used in India for thousands of years in order to control the masses (Thapar, 2004) and even used to enslave the masses during British rule (Hobson, Unk). In the United States, the Prosperity Theology has even spouted a powerful organization called The Family, which is often referred to as the Christian Mafia by current and former members (Sharlet, 2009). Sharlet, a writer with Harper’s and Rollingstone exposes this Christian Mafia as having a membership of prominent businessmen and US Congressman, and that they use Hitler, Mao and Lenin as models how to obtain power. According to him, they preach a gospel of biblical capitalism, military might, and American empire.
Obviously during these times, many people should be turning to new systems, or at least an old system that has taught for 2,500 years that the solution to all the problems, the pains of the world are not found in the powerful, the rich or even in our religious teachers… but in ourselves. Buddha was able to respond to his times by revealing a method of practice that would change the way we think. Now in our times where we can kill millions of people just by the push of one button, how much more relevant is this?

Banning of Chinese toys- Kids’ Story
Government of India has prohibited import of ‘Toys’ from China appearing under ITC Codes 9501, 9502, 9503 of Schedule – I of ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items. The prohibition has come with effect from 23 January 2009 and will remain in force for six months. Prohibition covers following toys from China:
9501 Wheeled toys designed to be ridden by children (for example, tricycles, scooters, pedal cars); dolls’ carriages 9502 Dolls representing only human beings 9503 Other toys; reduced-size (“scale”) models and similar recreational models, working or not; puzzles of all kinds
Although DGFT notification No. 82 /(RE-2008)/2004-2009 dated 23 January 2009 says that “Import of Toy” are prohibited, since the prohibition covers all goods falling under Codes 9501, 9502, 9503, even parts of such toys are covered within the said prohibition. The apparent reason for import ban on Chinese toys is concern about child safety. It is believed that Chinese toys contain high level of toxicity injurious to the health of a child. High levels of lead in children’s bodies can cause physical illnesses, including diarrhea and nausea, and can also, reportedly, harm children’s intellectual development and their IQ levels. Phthalates -DEHP, DBP and BBP, commonly added to plastic products to make them soft and pliable, found in soft plastic toys may cause serious long-term side effects, such as hormone malfunctioning and reproductive defects. CPC and other hazardous chemicals used in doll dress are believed to be carcinogenic. It is also alleged that Chinese toys have loose small parts which may come off from the toys while playing and may be a health hazard when swallowed by the child.
In recent months, Chinese toys have created a scare worldwide for above reasons and led to recall of many toys. Mattel recalled “Sarge” vehicles, Dora the Explorer products, gangly dolls of Big Bird from Sesame Street and almost a million other toys from its Fisher-Price line and Nickelodeon characters, all manufactured in China. RC2′s Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway toy line were recalled. In January 2009, DDI Inc., Iowa, USA recalled Toy Construction Play Sets and Fantas-Eyes Inc., New York, USA recalled High School Musical Manicure Kits all manufactured in China due to lead containment. A comprehensive list of the Chinese toys recalled in recent months in USA can be accessed @ http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html. I
t is really very scary to know that our children are playing with life threatening Chinese toys and it appears that Government has really done a commendable job. USA and European countries have taken a lead in recalling the Chinese toys, and India, a latecomer joined the bandwagon by banning the import. Many countries in the world have quality standards for Toys & Children’s Products. Most of these seek to limit potential hazards, such as choking or fire hazards that could cause injury. Children, especially very small ones, often put toys into their mouths, so the materials used to make a toy are regulated to prevent poisoning. Materials are also regulated to prevent fire hazards. Children have not yet learned to judge what is safe and what is dangerous, and parents do not always think of all possible situations, so such warnings and regulations are important on toys.
Presently, India does not have quality standard for toys. It is reported in media that Government is working out quality standard for toys and within six months we will have our own standard. Till such time, our children are deprived from the pleasure of toys. I think you know all what I have told as you may also be following the frenzied media reporting about the recall of dodgy Chinese products from superstore shelves in the US, UK and other European countries. All this happened in spite of the fact that they have very tough quality standard. We also know that quality of Chinese toys exported to US and Europe is much higher than what the Indian importers have been importing into India. Therefore, India is rather facing a much more precarious situation at home.
Still I am wondering whether ban on Chinese toys is correct. Are Chinese toys actually lethal or “toxic toys” drama is a poisonous metaphor for contemporary fears of China, of its apparently rapacious economic growth, of adulteration of milk and chocolate products. Lead-based paints are dangerous when the lead is leached and indigested by the children. Lead can’t be inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Lead from the paint can be leached only by continuous sucking on such toys and putting them in the mouth for days at a stretch, or by indigestion of significant amount of scrapings of paints. Children often suck on toys, but not for ‘days at a stretch’.
In the year 1998-99, the George Foundation under “Project Lead Free” screened blood of children in major cities and found that over 51% of the children below the age of 12 living in major urban areas of India had unacceptably elevated levels of blood lead of 10 mcg/dl or more. Blood lead levels in children of around 10 mcg/dl are associated with disturbances in early physical and mental growth and in later intellectual functioning and academic achievement. Lead contamination most often arises from the dust and soil, but can also come from lead water pipes or environmental pollution. Lead concentrations in blood of residents near waste dump, where you can see a large number of children playing, is typically high. However, none of the various studies have ever pointed out lead in paints of toys as a contributing factor for higher lead concentration in children blood.
Toys have a history as old as human civilization itself. The origin of toys is prehistoric; dolls representing infants, animals and soldiers are readily found at archaeological sites. They have been written about in some of our oldest literature. Toys excavated from the Indus valley civilization (3000-1500 BCE) include small carts, whistles shaped like birds, and toy monkeys which could slide down a string. Toys, like play itself, serve multiple purposes in both humans and animals. They provide entertainment while fulfilling an educational role. Toys enhance cognitive behavior and stimulate creativity. They aid in the development of physical and mental skills which are necessary in later life. Toys for infants often make use of distinctive sounds, bright colors, and unique textures. Through play with toys infants begin to recognize shapes and colors. Repetition reinforces memory.
We grew with toys made from clay and wood. They were simple toys produced by village artisan. Fancy toys were luxury meant for affluent. A lot of water has flown in Ganges since the import of toys was de-regulated. Now, Chinese toys are not only available to urban kids but even invaded remotest and poorest household in India. Chinese toys are complicated with flashing lights and sounds which appeal to children. Cheap Chinese toys create a ‘wow’ moment for kids that have fun, innovative features and include new technologies and engaging content. I am amazed with a cheap Chinese helicopter which goes 10 feet up in the air and cost just Rs 800/.
Chinese toys are not “Toxic” but “Exotic” for the children. There are more toxic substances out there ruining health of our kids and killing them. A World Bank study of 2000 put the number of yearly deaths in India among children due to dirty water at 2.06 million. The maximum permissible level (MPL) of lead recently proposed by Codex Alimentarius Commission is 0.1 ?g/g for cocoa butter (a key ingredient in chocolate) and 1.0 ?g/g for cocoa mass and cocoa powder (COPAL 2004b). In a recent study of cocoabased chocolates sold in India, Dahiya found the average lead concentrations to be 1.92 ?g/g, which is much higher than MPL. By banning the import of Chinese toys, we are depriving our children from some cheap exotic toys which the kid has become accustomed to. I fail to understand how parents are going to convince the child about harmful effect, or it is going to be “Tabilisation” of childhood.
Some may argue that Government has banned import of toys only from China and imports from other countries are still allowed and therefore our children will not be deprived of the pleasure of toys. Import statistics of toys for past 5 years reveals that about 90% of imported toys were from China. Korea is a distant 2nd source.
Therefore, other countries are unlikely to fill in the vacuum created on banning of Chinese toys. The notification has banned import of toys parts also. Domestic toy manufacturer importing parts from China are also likely to suffer. China has shown the world that mass production can bring the cost of products to ridiculous low level. Even if Indian entrepreneurs tries to fill in the gap, they will never be able to match the price which our remotest and poorest household in India have witnessed in near past. Surprisingly, notification prohibits import of ‘Toys’ from China. It is estimated that about 75% of toys sold in USA are manufactured in China. It is also known that parts and components manufactured in China are widely used by toys manufacturer around the world. It is a question of interpretation whether Chinese toys imported from USA or other countries will be permitted free import. Toys sold by Mattel, Funskool & Lego will also be affected as either toys or parts are Chinese. Many quality standards around the worlds are available for toys. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has certain quality standards, ISO 8124-1:2000 for Safety of Toys, ISO 8124-2:1994 for Flammability, ISO 8124-3:1997 for Migration of Certain Elements. Similarly, ASTM, American and European standards are also available. Till our standards are drafted, Chinese toys may be allowed importation as per ISO or ASTM standard. I Hope that cry of our children will be heard by the policy makers in near future. Till then, I am mourning the demise of Chinese toys from the life of our kids.
